Overview: Slave named Lydia misbehaving, tried to run away, he shot her, Mann was fined Ten dollars.

-it was assault; any punishment that is inhumane, cruel and unusual punishment.

-technically not his slave
-legally belonged to Elizabeth Jones
-Damaged to another's property, Lydia was not property of John Mann

-Mann's action didn't cause happiness to anyone
-State vs hill: committed personal violence on slave by striking him, he was found guilty
-harm of slave is punishable by law
Mann
-Mann owned Lydia for a year, still property, therefore could do anything at the time he owned her.
-Illegal for Lydia to run away, so he could punish her.

-Running north can be punished
-Slaves were made property
-ethically saving slave, bc bounty hunters, she didn't die, could've had much more severe punishment
