Dred Scott: born into slavery, Sold to Mr. Emerson, married Harriett Robinson, Died September 7th
Justice Nelson thought the case belonged to the state instead of federal court
Though Scott should be freed under Missouri law
Ruled Scott wasn't a citizen
The dissenting opinion: an African person cant be a citizen of the US
Roger B. Taney- Chief justice of supreme court, 5th of the US, ridiculed for his decision by abolitionists and northerners
Reaction of verdict: opponents of slavery fiercely attacked the Dred Scott decision
Scott became known as famous for his bravery and courageousness.
2nd Team: Emerson was scotts first owner who was a US army surgeon and stayed in areas where slaves were free.
Taney said free or slave no black person could ever be a US citizen
Missouri Compromise: Missouri=slave, maine=free
Mason Dixon line
Dred Scott was bought in mizzou, and his own moved in places where slavery was illegal
They wouldn't grant him freedom so he took it to court
Impact on Civil War:
before civil war there wasn't a lot of real tension between north and south
It created distrust for the supreme court
Also Political Impacts- first republican president=Abe lincoln, helped create 13th and 14th amendment
